This itinerary is organised geographically to make it easier to follow.
We have taken an area - The Roman City - and divided it up into smaller units, to organise coherently the great number of buildings and monuments of high artistic merit that are bound up with our history.
This city nucleus has undergone many changes over time, which explains why you can find a sculpture from 1995 next to a 10th-century building.
There buildings that have seen various alterations and which consequently contain important elements or features from several eras. In such cases, the colours we use to indicate a specific building correspond to that building's most representative stages: e.g. the Cathedral is colour-coded blue, representing Gothic, and green, representing the 19th-20th centuries).
