Neighbourhood markets

Neighbourhood markets reflect the character of Barcelona people. There is no better way to get to know their habits than by going to the market.

As there are 40 markets to choose from, the general advice we would give is to visit the one nearest where you are staying. Experience first-hand the atmosphere as the ordinary people of Barcelona go about their daily lives. Each neighbourhood market has its own personality. You will discover things you did not know about the eating habits and people in this welcoming city. Do you want to go for a look round?

For example, you could try the remodelled market at Barceloneta, a fisherman's neighbourhood where you could also try the restaurants. Or there are the markets in the popular neighbourhoods like Sants (Sants and Hostafrancs) and Gràcia (Abaceria Central and La Llibertat), those in Clot, El Ninot in Eixample, the Sant Andreu and Poblenou markets and so on till you reach 40. There are a lot to choose from, just pick one. If you like markets, you will not regret visiting them.

The heart of the neighbourhood

A good way to get to know a neighbourhood is to start with its market. Choose a market in one of the more popular neighbourhoods. Going round its market you will get an idea of the Barcelonian character and no doubt find a stall, a little corner or something you will not forget, a fond memory of your visit.
